Heritage Carriages

Passenger carriages that operate today were originally built at the Victorian Railways Newport Workshops and designed to run on country mainline and branch line services.

Many are over 100 years old and have been restored to full operating condition with further carriages currently undergoing restoration in readiness for future operations.

The railway also operates guards vans and freight vans, as well as wagons used to conduct maintenance operations on the railway.

Join us any Sunday for a journey aboard our heritage wooden bodied carriages.

Heritage locomotives

The railway maintains and operates various locomotives to conduct regular and special services.
They include:

Steam locomotive K163 which was built at Victorian Railways Newport Workshops in 1941.

A steam locomotive requires regular minor and major maintenance. A second steam locomotive K177 is under restoration.

Diesel locomotives were introduced into Victoria in the 1950s.

Diesel electric locomotives T334 and T411 provide alternate power for passenger and work trains. Diesel hydraulic locomotive W241 provides additional power.

THE JOURNEY

Your 5km journey starts at Moorooduc Station and takes approximately one hour to complete the trip through Tanti Park to Mornington and back.
Multiple services operate every Sunday between Moorooduc and Mornington stations.

More than just a mode of transportation: it’s a trip back in time to a bygone era.

MOOROODUC STATION

Moorooduc Station is the main depot and station complex with footbridge (ex- North Fitzroy), kiosk, souvenirs, accessible toilets and free parking. It is also where all the maintenance of the locomotives and rolling stock is done and guided tours around the yard and workshops occasionally take place.

Departing Moorooduc, the train travels up an incline through a timbered area, over the hill past sporting fields and a level crossing at Wooralla Drive.

Ambling along through native bushland, you have the chance to experience travel like it used to be – a little slower but way more fun!

MORNINGTON STATION

Mornington Station is located at Yuilles Road, one street away from Nepean Highway.

With a short platform, passengers need to ensure that their exit doorway is opposite the platform.
Passengers may alight here to enjoy the adjacent parkland. A viewing area allows passengers to watch the locomotive as it runs around the train to couple up to the other end in preparation for the return to Moorooduc.

At times, when published, a shuttle bus service operates between this station and Mornington township, allowing passengers to spend a few hours there before returning to Moorooduc on a later train.

Tanti (Racecourse) Station

Tanti Park Station, the middle stop on the line, opened on 18 June 1936 and was originally named Mornington Racecourse Platform, due to the many racegoers who once travelled from Melbourne by steam train to enjoy a flutter on the ponies at the Mornington horse races.

It opened for general traffic on 12 April 1969, and was renamed Tanti Park on 19 December of that year.

Since mid-2009, the station has been unmanned and is now a pickup and drop-off point for passengers travelling on the tourist railway.
