OUR STORY

In 1984, the Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS) was formed as a not-for-profit organisation with a focus on heritage railroading through restoration, education and experience.

Located at Moorooduc, the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula, the Mornington Tourist Railway is a volunteer operated heritage railway that offers passengers a memorable journey on restored vintage passenger cars.

Creating memories since 1999.

HERITAGE

Originally opened in September 1889, the Mornington line (Baxter to Mornington) lasted nearly 100 years before all traffic ceased in 1981 and the Mornington line fell into a state of disrepair.

Formed in 1984, MRPS was granted an Order in Council in 1991 to restore the Mornington line and operate as a tourist railway. The Mornington Tourist Railway runs on the former Mornington Branch line, recreating the original Victorian Railways branch line operation.

The volunteers of the Mornington Tourist Railway are passionate about preserving Victoria’s Industrial Heritage; an era of elegance when the journey was as important as the destination itself.

Today, steam and heritage diesel-hauled passenger services operate between Moorooduc and Mornington (Yuilles Road).

Strategic Direction

The goal of Mornington Railway Presentation Society (MRPS) is the preservation and restoration of heritage railway vehicles and infrastructure, while becoming a feature tourist destination and heritage experience on the Mornington Peninsula.

Our core objectives include:

  • Reopening the Moorooduc to Baxter section and reconnecting the railway to the Stony Point line and the rest of the Victorian main line network
  • Restoring a second and third steam locomotive and additional rollingstock
  • Rebuilding the former Cheltenham station building at Moorooduc
  • Reestablishing the former Somerton signalbox as a fully functional facility
  • The creation of an immersive heritage museum
  • The expansion and upskilling of our 100% volunteer team

AcknowledgEment of country

The entire team at the Mornington Tourist Railway want to acknowledge that we are gathered on the traditional lands of the Bunurong/Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation.

We wish to recognise that we meet, gather, volunteer and travel on the traditional lands of our countries first travellers; that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a continued connection to the land and waters of this nation, and that the first nations peoples’ living culture continues to have a unique role in the life of our region.

We wish to pay our respects to all Bunurong/Boon Wurrung elders and ancestors; and to extend that respect to any first nations people who visit the Mornington Tourist Railway.

This was, is, and always will be Aboriginal land.

This concept represents the connection between the history of the land (burgundy, single and double circles – knowledge and strength), the history of the rail network (blue and yellow), the local waterway (Balcombe Creek, blue) and the history of the people from all walks of life (green, larger circles surrounded by smaller circles – meeting place, everyone talking) that come together to enjoy the heritage; the ride across the landscape that, although has changed over time, still holds wealth in the form of beauty.
